Merritt College Cuts the Ribbon on its New Solar Energy Project that will Save $16.8 Million Over 25 Years and Offset 380 Tons of Carbon Emissions

On Tuesday December 14, 2010 at 1 PM Merritt College, part of the Peralta Community College District, celebrates the completed construction of its on-campus Photovoltaic (PV) system in Parking Lot C located at 12500 Campus Drive in Oakland. This project was made possible by the generous voters who approved the Measure A bond to upgrade Peralta’s facilities.

The 1.2MW system consists of two portions, a set of panels mounted on new carports in Parking Lot C, and a set of panels mounted to the grounds near the Football field. The system is capable of generating 1,500,000 kWh every year, enough to power 215 California homes. Multiple project benefits include a reduction in Merritt’s electrical bill by 40% – a $16.8 million savings in energy expenditures over 25 years – receipt of $1.8 million in incentives from the California Solar Initiative and 750,000lbs less of global-warming gas CO2 emitted annually. Most of the energy will be produced during the summer. Since the panels will be generating more than the college will consume, PG&E will buy the excess electricity through its Net-Metering program, generating additional revenue for the District.

PV systems use solar electric panels to directly convert the sun’s energy into electricity without moving parts. They operate silently and pollution free. One portion of Merritt’s project has been installed as overhead canopies in Parking Lot C, delivering the additional benefit of covered parking with underneath lighting delivering greater safety and weather protection for students, faculty, other employees and visitors. The other portion is on the hillside immediately behind the college. Project design and panel placement was determined through a collaborative effort that included faculty, site and District employees and Chevron Energy Solutions consultants, with a special focus on preserving Merritt’s panoramic views.

“Peralta is fully committed to sustainability and this investment in clean, renewable energy will reap tremendous dividends for our District and the environment” says newly elected Board of Trustees President Dr. William Riley. “This money saved by the Peralta Colleges through this project helps us to put more into our classrooms, a benefit that is especially appreciated in these challenging financial times.”

Peralta’s Department of General Services, responsible for implementing and managing Measure A projects, oversaw this initiative. Dr. Sadiq B. Ikharo, Vice Chancellor of General Services reiterated that “the District is excited about how its first alternative energy project moves Peralta closer to sustainable energy, results in reduced electricity costs and allows us to hedge against future rate increases in line with the Board’s policy on sustainability.”
